ILMA Offers "You Be the Chemist" to Members at Discount
ALEXANDRIA, VA (August 18, 2008) As evidenced through the Association's Scholarship Program, ILMA is committed to today's youth and helping further their educational goals. ILMA is pleased to announce that, in partnership with the Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF), it is offering another opportunity to educate students in science and improve the chemistry in member's communities by utilizing CEF's You Be The Chemist Activity Guides.
The two booklets, one for grades K-4 and the other for grades 5-8, are available for purchase at a special ILMA rate of $20 each or $35 for both.
ILMA Past President Jim Taglia has already ordered 25 copies of each. "I will be donating the books to a number of schools in the Twin Cities for use as a lesson planner for the teachers," he said. "From a couple of teachers I have chatted with, they are quite happy that someone is addressing the issue that most teachers are not comfortable with teaching science and they realize there is a shortage of scientists and they feel this will help."
The K-4 YBTC Guide includes lesson plans such as:
- Goofy Putty - Combine glue and borax and explore what happens
- Steamy Metals - Investigate how aluminum foil and construction paper can demonstrate thermal conductivity
- Seltzer Reaction Rates - Time a race of seltzer tablets to learn more about the effect of heat on rates of chemical reactions.
The 5-8 YBTC Guide includes:
- Rusting Wool - Initiate a chemical reaction and find out about oxidation
- Lumpy Liquids - Combine two solutions to form a solid and demonstrate the process of precipitation
- Egg-Dye Solutions - Dye eggs to experiment with acids and bases
Order your copies online or download the order form here and return it to the ILMA office. All proceeds benefit the ILMA Scholarship Program.
