Multi-Industry Coalition Against Tariffs Launched

September 13, 2018

More than 85 trade associations announced this week the formation of Americans for Free Trade, a multi-industry coalition aimed at taking public their opposition to President Trump’s tariffs policy and highlighting the benefits of international trade to the U.S. economy.

This new coalition, along with Farmers for Free Trade, is launching a $3 million campaign, “Tariffs Hurt the Heartland,” to highlight what it says is the comprehensive damage the Trump administration’s trade war is having on individual businesses and communities through town-hall style events, grassroots communications to Congress and the White House, social media, rapid response teams and digital advertising.

Americans for Free Trade has created a geographically-searchable map that allows users to read stories of job losses, deferred investments, higher prices and other negative consequences from the president’s tariffs actions.

The new coalition is being led by organizations including the American Petroleum Institute, National Retail Federation, and National Association of Chemical Distributors.

The new coalition’s letter to Capitol Hill on its campaign and a list of the trade organizations that make up Americans for Free Trade is available online.
